"The modern-day butler has long dispensed with the coat-tails, the obsequiousness and the silver platter next to the chip on his shoulder. Today, many don't even have a set job description...Ellen Pack of Town and Country Resources in the San Francisco Bay area, says she has received more requests in the last couple of years for what is known as a family assistant. "People will say, 'Oh, I need an Alice,'" she says, referring to the beloved television domestic from The Brady Bunch, who was famous for her tart tongue and blue uniform. They take the dog to the groomer, drop off the dry cleaning, pick up the prescriptions, exchange sneakers at the mall, all while taking the kids to class."

"Necessity forced Andy Schwab to hire a private chef. A month before Valentine's Day, every restaurant he called was booked.
&Country Resources, a domestic staffing company, and found a chef to cook a gourmet meal for him and his wife." He was, "worried about finding the right personality. Food was almost secondary" "A gourmet chef is a gourmet chef" he said, "The questions is: Do you feel comfortable with this person in your house? Does he or she have the right view of the thing? That was the risk. For Schwab, the risk paid off. Their chef, Steve Ganner, did the shopping and prepped in his own kitchen, which many private chefs do. Ganner arrived an hour before dinner, cooked the meal, served it and cleaned up. He was in the Schwabs' house only 2 1/2 hours. The evening cost $250, plus the price of the best bottle of wine in Schwab's cellar..." For the full article click here.

Excerpt from: What’s a Nanny and How to Find One by Corrie Pelc

"While there is a fee for using a nanny placement agency, Ellen Pack, President of Town & Country Resources, believes the professional level of employees an agency can provide far outweighs the price. The amount of time a family would need to put in the kind of extensive checking that we do is dependent on how much time they have and can be prohibitive in a sense, Pack adds that since the majority of parents do not have the experience in screening and performing background checks that her staff has, parents may not be able to find the red flags that her staff can when interviewing candidates for nanny positions. The pros are really that there is time saving from the screening perspective and also the security of knowing that this person has been thoroughly checked, she says. This security was one of the reasons Erin Ruane returned to an agency after trying on her own to find her third nanny. "After the second time I thought oh, I can do this myself and I ran an ad the paper and it was a horrific experience," she recalls. "I probably got 30 phone call s and it just takes an enormous amount of time with the whole prescreening." Then after two weeks of disappointments and not getting anywhere close to finding a nanny, Ruane decided to go back to Town & Country which was able to find her a nanny within a few days."
