Talking to Children about the News
The recent events in Boston, Hurricane Sandy, as well as other horrific events in recent years can lead kids to ask many questions. It’s important to talk honestly with your children about tragic events like this to keep them aware and to inform them of some of the dangers out there.
Below are several websites that you can visit to get great tips on having these discussions with your children:
- Mister Rogers talks about how to discuss scary news (video).
- Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, VP of Research and Education at Sesame Street Workshop, on how to answer children’s questions about scary news (video).
- PBS Strategies for talking to kids about the news.
Be sure and give your children big hugs and kisses and remind them that the world is also full of love and kindness.
